School of Rock
Richard Linklater

Abi Hatton

Catch that school bus on time because today’s lesson can’t be missed! This fantastic film will please rockers of all ages thanks to Jack Black’s all-round humour.

Desperate for money, Dewey Finn (Jack Black) takes a job as a substitute teacher. On discovering his pupils are musically talented, he forms a class project: a rock band! The result is a steady stream of laughs from when the film begins to when the credits roll at the end.

Although the film is very funny, to enjoy the humour fully you probably have to be an old rocker or a fan of old rock music. Most young kids won’t get the references to such bands as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd or guitarist Jimi Hendrix. Despite my own youth, though, I am lucky enough to know these stars, because I live with my rockstar (in her dreams!) mum.

Certainly, this film promotes very talented kids like Joey Gaydos Jr as Zack the guitar player, Kevin Clark as Freddy Jones the drummer, Maryam Hassan as the amazing singer Tamika and even the very good acting skills of bossy teacher's pet, Summer Hathaway (Miranda Cosgrove). These all combine to put together an amazing, rock-filled film. So… to rock or not to rock? That is the question!
