Cathy Holroyd is a recently divorced TV chef on a cable TV channel. The show also features a variety of supporting characters all played by Kate Pilkington and Hannah Stokely. Both actresses are undoubtedly talented and this is particularly clear in the musical numbers, but much of the material seems familiar or derivative. We've seen spoof TV channels before, and abandoned hysterical women on the edge are familiar from many poor TV sitcoms. Cathy Holroyd displays a forced amiability with a barely concealed bitterness, but she is not interesting or different. Rob Brydon's Marion & Geoff, and Arabella Weir's understated Posh Nosh, are hard acts to follow as far as deluded divorcees and deluded TV chefs are concerned. Granted these may be unfair comparisons. Cathy Holroyd may well find her own niche, but some more original material would help. 30 July to 24
