The Exam
Rocket @ Demarco Roxy Art House, Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Group: Mazdram

Tom Ogg

The exam is coming, but the keys to the hall have been mislaid. The exam is continually delayed, and the poor students are waiting (one of who broke his collar bone a week before, yet miraculously is fine).

If you take a few tired stereotypes, and beat them to death, even for laughs, the result is often excruciating. At times I found it hard to breathe. I sat it out for the future confidence of the young actors, and because the parents present would have booed me; but really you should not be there in the first place. The pressured posh kid rebels, the poor dumb but (it materialises, quite shockingly) people person gets the Sartre reading girl who is too intelligent for her own good. The PE teacher is shagging the dim-witted and tutting geography teacher behind his wife's back. The plot says nothing new.

I will simply say be glad that the run of this play is over, for you will not make the mistake of seeing this awful play.

3 August to 9 August.
