Shakespeare's Italian Job
Metro Gilded Balloon Teviot, Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Group: Restored by Malachi Bogdanov

Andrew Chippindale

Neither fish nor foul, this is the very worst of both worlds. Lacking either the excitement or wit of the filmic inspiration, or any of the Shakespeare's stagecraft or lyricism, this is a horrible hybrid.

What this childish script offers is an unfunny pantomime mish-mash of well-known Shakespearean lines pieced together into a crude plot with only the slightest of passing nods to The Italian Job. The actors are, without exception, mugging for all they are worth, and a disgrace to the profession while, the staging is not half so clever or knowing as it would like to think it is.

This is the sort of careless, opportunist; lowest common denominator moneymaking at its most loathsome that gives the fringe a name for poorly conceived novelty acts. After all, it is a pretty snappy conceit for a show and one which, if paid a little more attention, could have actually been rather good (vide; last year's Bombitty of Errors or Jerry Springer - The Musical)

Most likely it will sink into the ignominy it richly deserves and will be ignored by everyone.

1 August to 25 August.
