Simon Munnery: Trilogy
Part One: Onward and Upward: songs, jokes and refections

The Stand Comedy Club, Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Group: The Stand Comedy Club I

Ravi Bali

Watching Munnery is always a joy, his delivery is not always razor sharp and I suspect he is self consciously bumbling at times. But there is so much material, of such a high quality, packed into one of his performances that the laughs come thick and fast. Even seemingly throwaway lines such as 'I was walking down the road the other day, 'which road?' you ask, well it doesn't matter there is only one road really because ultimately they all link up, a road that doesn't link up is not a road at all - it's a runway" is only mildly amusing in isolation. However when these are observations are piled one on top of the other the cumulative effect is to have you in stitches.

He builds a good part of his routine around (the apparently true story) of being diagnosed with testicular cancer and having one of his balls removed, even this he manages to make extremely funny. His invention of phrases which he passes off as clichés such as 'Ladies take care of your appearance (pause), but not so much you fail to make one' are done in a style that no other comic in Britain can match. He is this country's only answer to the great US comic Steven Wright in terms of inventiveness, which is about the highest praise I can think of for a stand-up.

Bizarre, surreal and yet able to pierce some of life absurdities (downloading child porn contributes to its creation anyone?), Munnery is a comic genius! I won't spoil the show by giving away too many of his gags, just go to see him as soon as you can!
