The main character in the Erl King is a somewhat simple yet charming Frenchman caught up in Nazi Germany during World War II. He unwittingly becomes involved in an SS training camp and blunders deep into the SS machine. He never realises quite what he is doing, nor looks at the bigger picture in any context, until it is far too late. Our friendly Frenchman is a chirpy chappie, who manages to win over the deadliest of foes through his innocent charm and eagerness. This enjoyable production serves as a timely reminder in the wake of the Iraq war of quite why it was so important to win the World War II, and contrasts tellingly to our most recent war. It also shows us that ignorance and blindness to our own principles can cause great pain and suffering; and moreover, that often those in ignorance require illumination, rather than ridicule and abuse.
