Sceptic: Lawrence Leung
Metro Gilded Balloon Teviot, Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Group: Lawrence Leung

Dave Clements

In 'Sceptic', Lawrence Leung, pursues a gentle mission of debunking superstition, the supernatural and their associated charlatans.

His jokey stats, formulas and charts mock their spurious claims, in much the same way as Mark Thomas's Comedy Product mocks big business. Leung ridicules techniques used by so-called psychics, such as 'cold reading', to exploit the sad, lonely and desperate to believe.

Despite the title of the show, Leung in the end wonders whether he'd do better to debunk his own scepticism. Indeed, in a world filled with cynicism, the sceptic is pushing at an open door. Speaking as an atheist, I find the idea of faith infinitely more appealing in its promise of transcendence (even if spiritualism is a poor substitute for monotheism).

Irrationality is only human, said Leung. But we have a monopoly on the rational. And that really is something worth believing in.
