Group: Androgynous Productions

Natasha Hulugalle

With 3, Androgynous Productions aim at a physically emotive piece of theatre: there is no chance for boredom although there is some scope for bewilderment.

As a physically driven production there is little dialogue from the three performers but plenty of visual projections, deranged voiceovers and creepy lullaby singing.

Although the subject matter is the woman destroyed, the girls are clearly having a wonderful time leaping and writhing around the stage, interspersing their frolics with violent bursts of sobbing. At several points during the show one of the three thrusts her hands down regulation white jogging trousers and starts hurling out handfuls of red rose petals. Presumably referring to the miracle of childbirth, it makes a startling impact.

Androgynous productions are clearly enthusiastic about this production and want to spin a new version of the female identity question and how women relate to each other. Female identity has become a timeless classic, but it may be that 3 is all froth with little real substance.
