Fat
Venue 45, Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Group: Z Theatre Company

Ravi Bali

A comic exploration of the contemporary fad for attaining the body beautiful through obsessive gym workouts. It has some elements of a well done soap with predictable relationship scenarios, but is livened up by some theatrical devices such as the chorus of health nuts that punctuate and fill in the dramatic action.

It largely revolves around the stories of Catherine, Steve and Samantha who each have their own reasons for coming to the gym that are rooted as much in addressing their emotional needs as it is in getting physically fit.

A trial is convened to examine their alleged crimes of allowing their gym attendance to lapse in recent weeks (why this merits a trial is not explained). In the course of their defence we learn of how the three defendants became friends and what led them each to question their obsession with body beautiful.

It is not a deep play and has a pretty muddled message. It is heavy handed as a condemnation of the body fascism that is supposed to be quite prevalent today - but as a drama on personal relationships it is fluffy good fun.
