Group: Androgynous Productions

Dolan Cummings

This is the closest thing I've ever seen to a live sex show, but I'm not sure that's the point.

Sarah Kane's play about torture and humiliation is notoriously hard to stage. Tongues are cut out, digits chopped off, and an amateur sex change conducted. Really it's about the annihilation of the will, and consequently the destruction of the self, in a fantastically brutal imaginary institution.

For much of this performance, though, I was left musing about the double standards that apply to stage nudity. Three pairs of breasts on display, but boxer shorts firmly in place, even when the wearer is being impaled on a broom handle. Caught between two stools, I should say.

Ultimately, the ironically-named Androgynous Productions fail to make the play add up to more than the sum of its parts, if you'll excuse the pun, revelling in the toughness of the piece rather than trying to make something of it.

1 August to 24 August.
