This only lasts half hour, but it feels much longer. For the first 20 minutes there is just the wide-eyed and vacant figure of Hanako on stage. We learn that she has been driven mad waiting for a man who, despite a promise, has not returned to her. She is convinced he will come, since they made the hugely significant gesture of exchanging fans. We learn that Hanako lives with another woman who acts as her benefactor. At the 20 minute mark, the sole actress on stage transforms into this woman as she describes her love for Hanako. She panics when she hears a knock at her door thinking it to be Yoshio, the man that Hanako has been waiting for. The benefactor does not want them to be reunited because though she loves Hanako, 'her unhappiness is beautiful and perfect, no one shall intrude upon it'. A play that has no dramatic development during the course of the performance, and that has no interaction between characters on stage, is the dramatic equivalent of a piece of mood music. Strange yet disappointing! 11
