The Tango (How to do)
C too, Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Group: Thirteen Theatre Company

James Gledhill

Tango has an interesting premise, exploring relationships between a group of characters brought together in a tango class, but this premise remains largely unexploited. With twelve performers (only one of whom had any real presence), and the fact that, as the programme makes clear, the characters are 'nowhere and for no reason with no idea', interesting dramatic possibilities remained unexplored.

The upshot is something that looks like a polished-up drama workshop free associating on the theme of the tango. The self-conscious surrealism and disjointed dialogue make the production difficult to relate to. There's also a lot of shouting for no apparent purpose.

Video and visuals are used to good effect, but one comes away exhausted and with an intense suspicion of anything which promises to provide a multi-faceted theatrical experience. Often, it seems, less is more.
