The Typographer's Dream
Pleasance Courtyard, Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Group: Bright Choice

Anrew Chippindale

Coming on like a careers fair, Adam Bock's new relationship comedy fills the first half hour of stage-time with three inter-cut monologues where a court stenographer, a geographer and the eponymous typographer give intricate descriptions of what it is they do, and why.

Impressively, as well as making this fascinating, both the writing and deft direction start to uncover interstices between these three disparate disciplines before mapping these parallels onto the wider context of their unhappy relationships.

The three actors are charismatic and energetic throughout, while the direction is crisp and clean, making an intelligent play sympathetic as well as very funny. One quibble might be that the script doesn't quite tie up all its loose ends, but this does not detract from enjoyment of this excellent production.

30 July to 25 August.
