Face the Wall
Venue 13, Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Group: RWCMD

James Gledhill

Two plays spliced together to give three stories of child killing, with murder by seemingly loving parents contrasted with the killing of schoolchildren by a man whose life is a picture of contentment. To what extent can we ever understand the motivation of someone on the point of such an act?

The parents monologues are an engaging process of slow revelation, confession, guilt and attempted self-justification. The performances are dramatically natural and understated, slowly drawing you in through the delineation of the minutiae of the characters lives, only to sharply bring you up against the horror of their eventual actions. The banality of the details of the act of murder itself is juxtaposed with the enormity of the resulting loss. The life of the school gunman is probed for an explanation of motivation.

One comes away with the impression that such details are futile and will never succeed in capturing the reason why a tipping point is reached. Similarly words are inadequate to provide justification or bring resolution.

It's an engrossing showcase for some impressive acting talent.
