Classic children's tales are reinterpreted and given scary characters in this noisy production at Komedia. The six fairytales in question are classics in their own right, but there is nothing grim about them. Rather they have happy endings with the scary baddies being beaten. They were not far off with the 'grim' description however; although rather than grim I'd say they are loud. The actors really are rather screechy, but they had the desired effect - the kids were scared. This is definitely a kiddies' production, although it is not too simplistic for mum and dad to enjoy. The evils characters are very effectively evil, I must say. Moreover, the goodies are the handsome and charming princes that we were promised. The play was a little loud for my tastes. Most of the sound effects could probably be heard in the Albert Hall, let alone the small theatre of the Komedia. The screeching of the witches in the play was quite fiendish, although my ears were complaining after a while. This is, however, a minor criticism. Classic mystical, love and friendship themes are explored here, though there really is nothing here that you will not have seen before. 10
