Affirmation is set in a fundamentalist atheist society that is at war with its neighbour The Holy Land. Three friends look worryingly at each other as they consider sharing the secret of their developing religious attitudes. If discovered to be harbouring belief in God they would be put to death by the ATAT (Atheist Through And Through) organisation, which holds absolute political power in their society. The play is an interesting idea that flows nicely, with very natural dialogue. At only forty minutes duration though, it is too short to give anything but a sketchy outline of the characters, their given situations and their relationships, let alone have scope to uncover the duplicitous game that each of the friends has been playing with one another. The friends make a decision to escape to the Holy Land, but suspicion lingers that nothing is what it seems, until the violent conclusion. 31 July to 24
August.
