Rereading

This week on CW, George Hoare looks back on Richard Hoggart’s The Uses of Literacy, and argues that its investigation into the transformation of class and culture sheds light on a process still unfolding today. Jo Caird reviews a retrospective collection of essays by Chinua Achebe, and finds them strikingly relevant to contemporary British readers. Javed Mohammed considers whether there is such a thing as ‘Muslim Cinema’, and suggests a selection of 101 films as a starting point. And in London theatre, Miriam Gillinson reviews a new version of Arthur Schnitzler’s Sweet Nothings at the Young Vic, and Giulia Merlo is pleasantly surprised by Promises Promises at Soho Theatre.
