The myth of motivation
With the inward turn that positive thinking brings comes the problem of procrastination. When teaching tennis players, a common problem is the decision to avoid competition until a particular stroke is working properly. I call this the ‘perfect forehand syndrome’.
An offside argument
The book does not fall into the trap of turning sport into a cause, a trend amongst sports bodies and government policy makers. It does, however, manifest a particularly nihilistic and fearful attitude to sporting competition.
